Gran Turismo: Why Neill Blomkamp is a bad director
Gran Turismo is a 2023 film based on the racing game series for Playstation, directed by Neill Blomkamp in an attempt to escape director jail after his latest film, Demonic, bombed really badly in 2021 and it takes the Tetris route and makes it a full on biopic as it tells the story of Jann Mardenborough, a British gamer who became a full on professional racing driver after winning a race that secured his position in GT Academy and led to him signing a contract with Nissan to race professionally. Unfortunately, for me, this is Blomkamp’s worst movie as a director.

Napoleon: How to make an inaccurate biopic unintentionally hilarious
Napoleon is a 2023 biopic about the great French general and emperor, directed by the one and only Ridley Scott. Upon release, it got mixed reviews and bombed at the box office, barely making over it’s massive $200 million budget (a movie needs to make around double it’s budget to be considered profitable), and it annoyed historians as the movie had truckloads of historical inaccuracies. Seeing the movie, I can confirm that it’s not only inaccurate but it’s also the most unintentionally hilarious movie of the year.

American Animals: How to blend documentary interviews with cinematic elements to create an engaging narrative
American Animals, which tells the story of 4 university students, wanting excitement in their lives, robbing their university library of rare books, is an interesting flick, in that it’s not your typical true story based movie. More rather, as the movie says in it’s opening, it IS a true story. And right from the opening scene, it establishes it rather quickly, though not in the ways you’d expect.

Gen Lock: An Autopsy on a passion project by a creative director with an ego
What does Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sym-Bionic Titan, Pacific Rim and Code Geass all have in common? They are all part of the Mecha Genre, a genre that showcases robots in battle, some even giant. Gen: Lock, a series created by Rooster Teeth is the latest series to join that genre but it’s rife with it’s own problems, resulting in a widely panned Season 2 and it’s cancellation.
So what exactly happened? Let’s find out.

No Mans Sky: When you actually listen to your fanbase
No Man’s Sky is an open world, action-adventure survival game set in space. Released in 2016 by Hello Games, it’s basically a mixture of Minecraft and Star Trek in space as you are dropped in space and left to explore, build, mine, and converse your way across the galaxy, not to mention there’s an intriguing storyline. And it’s avaliable on tons of platforms, including PS4, PC, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, macOS, Nintendo Switch, and soon iPadOS. And it’s multiplayer and cross-platform playable. And for anyone playing on Playstation or PC, you get the option of playing on your VR headset.
Pretty cool, huh? Well, it didn’t start out that way. Let’s start from the beginning to provide context.

Rebel Moon: When an overrated director indulges in his worst tendencies
Rebel Moon, or more accurately, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, is a 2023 Sci-Fi opera movie from Netflix, being their attempt to compete with Disney/Star Wars, having touted and advertised this for a couple of years. It’s written and directed by Zack Snyder, who I’ve come to realise that I actually don’t like as a filmmaker.

Firewatch: How the game tricks the player with it's gameplay and storyline
Firewatch is one of the most unique and compelling games that I've played this year. From it’s compelling storyline, unique gameplay design and atmosphere, it’s a game unlike any other in the genre. And the game utilises all of the above to subvert your expectations of this kind of game completely.

Heart of Stone: Why the main character ruins the movie
Heart of Stone is Netflix’s latest attempt at creating a franchise, akin to what they did with The Old Guard (which was also produced by Skydance). Though unlike The Old Guard, this wasn’t as successful as it got mediocre reviews. And part of why it failed, in my opinion, was due to the movie’s main character, Rachel Stone (played by Gal Gadot).

How hype can kill interest in a movie and why we should open our minds and decide for ourselves.
I’m just realizing that I’m not a fan of hype. I feel like my cynicism of modern day cinema (especially when it comes to Disney) stems from Rotten Tomatoes and just hype in general. And nowdays, the quality of movies are all over the place and you’re worried it won’t meet that hype people are expecting.
